Fun way of multiplication

Fun way of multiplication
Place your fingers as in the below image and number the fingers from 1 to 10.

Example
Consider the multiplication of 4 × 9.

Step 1:
Here 4 is to be multiplied by 9.
So, fold the 4th finger and count the ones before the folded finger.
Number of fingers before the folded finger = 3 fingers
Multiply the number by 10, = 3 × 10 = 30 -----> (1)
(as shown in the below figure)

Step 2:
Count the fingers after the folded finger = 6 -----> (2)
(as shown in the below figure)

Step 3:
Add (1) and (2),
= 30 + 6 = 36
Therefore the solution to our problem 4 × 9 = 36 is easily found using the above trick.

Note:
If there is no finger below/above the considered (folded) finger, then consider the value as zero (0).
Play the same for the below multiplications
1 × 9 = ?
2 × 9 = ?
3 × 9 = ?
4 × 9 = ?
5 × 9 = ?
6 × 9 = ?
7 × 9 = ?
8 × 9 = ?
9 × 9 = ?
10 × 9 = ?

Multiples and Least Common Multiples

Problem: An ice cream truck visits Jeannette's neighborhood every 4 days during the summer. Unfortunately, she missed it today. When can Jeannette expect the ice cream truck to visit her neighborhood again?
Solution: The ice cream truck will visit on days 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, ...

In the problem above, we found multiples of the whole number 4. The multiples of a whole number are found by taking the product of any counting number and that whole number. For example, to find the multiples of 3, multiply 3 by 1, 3 by 2, 3 by 3, and so on. To find the multiples of 5, multiply 5 by 1, 5 by 2, 5 by 3, and so on. The multiples are the products of these multiplications. Some examples of multiples can be found below. In each example, the counting numbers 1 through 8 are used. However, the list of multiples for a whole number is endless. The ... at the end of each list below lets us know that the list really goes on forever.

Example 1: Find the multiples of the whole number 4.
Multiplication: 4 x 1 4 x 2 4 x 3 4 x 4 4 x 5 4 x 6 4 x 7 4 x 8
Multiples of 4: 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32
Solution: The multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32,...

Example 2: Find the multiples of the whole number 5.
Multiplication: 5 x 1 5 x 2 5 x 3 5 x 4 5 x 5 5 x 6 5 x 7 5 x 8
Multiples of 5: 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40
Solution: The multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40,...

Example 3: Find the multiples of the whole number 7.
Multiplication: 7 x 1 7 x 2 7 x 3 7 x 4 7 x 5 7 x 6 7 x 7 7 x 8
Multiples of 7: 7 14 21 28 35 42 49 56
Solution: The multiples of 7 are 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56,...

Problem: During the summer months, one ice cream truck visits Jeannette's neighborhood every 4 days and another ice cream truck visits her neighborhood every 5 days. If both trucks visited today, when is the next time both trucks will visit on the same day?
Truck Days of Visits
1 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44,...
2 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55,...
Solution: Both ice cream trucks will visit Jeannette's neighborhood in 20 days and in 40 days. However, the problem asks: when is the next time both trucks will visit on the same day?, so the final answer is IN 20 DAYS.

In the problem above, we have found multiples of the numbers 4 and 5. We have also found the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of 4 and 5, which is 20. The Least Common Multiple of a set of whole numbers is the smallest multiple common to all whole numbers in the set.

To find the Least Common Multiple of two or more whole numbers, follow this procedure:

Make a list of multiples for each whole number.
Continue your list until at least two multiples are common to all lists.
Identify the common multiples.
The Least Common Multiple (LCM) is the smallest of these common multiples.

In Examples 4 and 5, place your mouse over the lists of multiples to see the common multiples.
Example 4: Find the LCM of 12 and 15.

Common multiples of 12 and 15 are 60 and 120
The least common multiple of 12 and 15 is 60.
Solution: LCM = 60 [IMAGE]
Example 5: Find the LCM of 18 and 24.

Common multiples of 18 and 24 are 72 and 144
The least common multiple of 18 and 24 is 72.
Solution: LCM = 72

Summary: The multiples of a whole number are found by taking the product of any counting number and that whole number. The Least Common Multiple (LCM) of a set of whole numbers is the smallest multiple common to all whole numbers in the set.

10on10 Math Tricks :)

10on10 is trying best to work towards making math fun and easy for kids. We always welcome suggestions from our 10on10 parents. 10on10 was started with a mission to make the foundation of kids strong in math. Math has always been the enemy of kids. Numbers tend to confuse the kids and give them hallucinations and nightmares.

Today one needs math in almost every field of education. Math is required in our day to day life as well. From time to money, everything needs math. Calculating on which day our birthday will come next year, is a math problem as well. Math has an implied relationship with our life.

Today our 10on10 Team wants to share some math tricks for kids, which they can share with friends and have fun:

Trick 1: Number below 10
Step1: Think of a number below 10.
Step2: Double the number you have thought.
Step3: Add 6 with the getting result.
Step4: Half the answer, that is divide it by 2.
Step5: Take away the number you have thought from the answer, that is, subtract the answer from the number you have thought.
Answer: It will always be 3

Trick 2: Day of the Week:
January has 31 days. It means that every date in February will be 3 days later than the same date in January (28 is 4 weeks exactly). The below table is calculated in such a way. Remember this table which will help you to calculate.
January 0
February 3
March 3
April 6
May 1
June 4
July 6
August 2
September 5
October 0
November 3
December 5

Step1: Ask for the Date. Ex: 23rd June 1986
Step2: Number of the month on the list, June is 4.
Step3: Take the date of the month, that is 23
Step4: Take the last 2 digits of the year, that is 86.
Step5: Find out the number of leap years. Divide the last 2 digits of the year by 4, 86 divide by 4 is 21.
Step6: Now add all the 4 numbers: 4 + 23 + 86 + 21 = 134.
Step7: Divide 134 by 7 = 19 remainder 1.
The reminder tells you the day.
Sunday 0
Monday 1
Tuesday 2
Wednesday 3
Thursday 4
Friday 5
Saturday 6
Answer: Monday

I hate Veggies……

“I hate brinjal, cauliflower, bittergourd, bottlegourd, spinach, cabbage………..”, these were the words of my niece when I asked her which vegetable she doesn’t like. Well the list was endless and almost covered all the vegetablesJ. Vegetables are never included in the favorite food list of a kid. Almost all the kids hate veggies and it worries poor moms a lot.
The vegetables are rich in vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Vitamin B6, provitamins, dietary minerals and carbohydrates. Vegetables contain a great variety of other phytochemicals, some of which have been claimed to have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties. Parents, mostly mothers, try all the tricks to feed veggies to their kids but most of the time it goes in vain.
The items which top the favorite food list of kids are pizza, burgers, pasta, french fries and anything which is fried and is non healthy and can lead to obesity. In US, the problem of childhood obesity is increasing. Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. Child obesity in India is also on a rise. Kids are becoming addicted to junk food. One can find McDonald’s , dominos, pizza hut etc. in almost every mall and near any shopping place.  Junk foods are high in saturated fat which leads to high cholesterol levels making one feel lethargic and heavy.
Parents need to see that their kids eat veggies on a daily basis. Vegetables can be presented to kids in an interesting way. There are lots of healthy recipes which combine vegetables and few other ingredients and make a tasty and healthy meal. One can find many recipes available online and can try some non conventional recipe of vegetables.
One of the ways to make your kids eat vegetable is go out for a shopping with them and let them pick the vegetables. Then ask them to help you while preparing the vegetable like putting veggies into the pan and so on and keep on praising them for helping you out.  This is an effective way to make your kids like the vegetables.
Parents need to make sure that their kids develop healthy way of eating and say, “I love veggies”.

Kids becoming gadget freak

Now-a-days kids are becoming more gadget freak as compared to adults. They want to try all the gadgets with latest technology.  Today market is full of electronic stuff and with lots of options. The famous gadgets among kids are ipad, iphone, kinect, xbox or anything with touch screen. Kids love to slide their tiny fingers on touch screens.
My friend gifted her daughter an ipad on her birthday. I had always imagined small girls with Barbie dolls but to see a girl with ipad in her hand was quite a shock. No matter how complicated the technology is,  kids can get hold of anything. Gone are the days when video games used to come in cassettes and were played with remotes. Now the video games are highly sophisticated, they work on motion sensing devices. Wave your hand and the bunny inside the video game will also wave the hand. 8-10 years back it would have looked like a dream but now it is a reality.
I visited croma (electronic items outlet) yesterday and there were lots of kids checking out the latest technologies. They were checking all the gadgets and knew how to use them very well. Today kids have access to all these items and their brains work in a different manner. When we were kids, we were happy with barbies, kitchen sets, tops, badminton etc., but now kids want all the hi-tech and advanced gadgets.
Search “Kids and gadgets” on google and you will find a list of gadgets which a kid must have. Now companies will tell the parents what gadgets their kids must have. Ipad tops this list followed by playstation. Today walkman is replaced with mp3 player or ipod, PC with laptops or ipads and video games with xbox. Parents should keep a check on these gadgets and their impact on kids. Kids should not become dependent on the gadgets and it is the parents’ responsibility to make sure their kids don’t get habitual of these gadgets.
