Every child is not same

“Not every child has an equal talent or an equal ability or equal motivation, but they should have the equal right to develop their talent and their ability and their motivation, to make something of themselves.”
-          John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)
After Amniocentesis, the most talked about test in India is ACTN3 test or Sports gene test. In India, it was launched by Super Religare Laboratories in March ’11. This test has garnered lots of controversy from its very inception.  Now, parents are least bothered whether it’s a girl or boy but if it’s an athlete or non athlete. When I read about this test in a leading newspaper, I was shocked to know that now a strand of DNA will determine the future of so many kids. Parents with positive results were very happy as if they have hit a jackpot and on the other hand parents with negative results were bankrupt.
Parents should understand that each child is unique and have their own qualities. With some tests, we cannot determine the future of kids. Kids should be allowed to take decisions themselves. Parents should avoid spoon feeding their kids and should make them self reliant. Each kid has different likes and dislikes, some are morning persons and some sleeps late at night; some throws tantrums and some are very reserved. Every child is different and needs a different style of parenting.
DNA is unique for each and every person. No two DNA matches with each other, then drawing out a comparison among two kids is baseless because both share different strands of DNA. No matter how much we train our kids to become what we want, we cannot change their natural tendencies and characteristics. We, as parents, should accept them for who they are.
Parents tend to blame their parenting style for their kid’s failure. None of the parenting styles is perfect. In the movie, ‘Taare Zameen Par’, father used to curse his son for not getting good at studies and used to blame his wife’s style of parenting. But, he never tried to find out the reason behind his kid’s failure. This movie was based on ‘Dyslexia’, a learning disability that impairs a person's fluency or comprehension accuracy in being able to read. It prompted many parents to visit psychologists to see if their kids are suffering from the same disability.  Many parents realized that there are many uncontrollable factors which can affect their kids’ development and they should change their parenting style to suit their kids’ requirements.
Each child is good at something. Parents need to identify their talent and should learn to appreciate it. Constant comparison with siblings or friends might make kids feel depressed and undeserving. It can affect their self confidence as well. Parents should have faith in their kids. They should not impose too many restrictions and put burden of expectations on them.
Parents should understand their kids and should respect their decisions. They need to change their parenting style as per their kids’ requirements and should not be influenced by others’ parenting method. Certain tests cannot decide the future of a kid but good parenting and understanding can prepare a kid for a bright future.

10on10 User’s Experience – 2

Every child has a breaking point in math. It is really difficult for a kid to understand all the concepts of math without any problem. 10on10 aims at providing help to understand all the concepts of math, before a child reaches his/her breaking point.

Kids can’t be attentive all the time. It is very easy to divert their attention from studies. Hence, the use of animal cartoons in 10on10 worksheet helps in retaining the attention of children and helps them experience the joy of self discovery and its application in the real world.

I’ve seen many parents struggling hard to make their kids love math. But, unfortunately there is no magic potion which can make a kid fall in love with math. In a relationship among two persons, understanding is very important, similarly in the relationship between math and a kid, understanding is essential. Without proper understanding, the whole relationship will fail. 10on10 worksheets help kids to understand math in a fun way and encourage them to solve answers with their own ingenuity, using concepts learnt from the worksheets.

One of our 10on10 parents, Anamika Bist , says, “Cheers !!! My kid loves this ...... :) happily she will ask for 10on10sheets :) thanks for making it like fun activity.” 10on10 program is a daily 10 minutes fun activity, which kids enjoy a lot. Most of our 10on10 parents have admitted to witness their kids’ improvement in  math subject after enrolling for 10on10 program.

Another parent, Jaishri Kimmatkar, says, “I have been using 10on10 from 2009 onwards. Its stuff is really good and knowledgebase”.  10on10 program is scientifically developed after much research by prestigious IITs mathematicians, child learning experts and India’s best creative illustrators.

10on10 program ensures that a child learns old and new math concepts necessary for life in a way that she/he won’t ever forget. 10on10 worksheets cover all math skills that a child needs for a brighter future.

KIDS have STRESS too

Stress has become a common term now a days. Everyone is blaming stress for all their mistakes and behavior. But it is really hard to believe that kids can have stress too. Parents live in an assumption that childhood is always full of happiness and there are no tensions as there are no responsibilities. But, they tend to forget that there is a web of expectations, anxiety and lack of communication around the kids which often leads to stress among them.
According to a study, stress can decrease the immunity level of a body. Chronic stress has also been shown to impair developmental growth in children by lowering the production of growth hormone, as in children associated with a home environment involving serious marital discord or abuse.
Kids are more prone to stress than adults, as they do not know how to cope with it. Stress among kids can be exhibited physically as fever, stomach ache, nightmares etc., or emotionally as anger, crying, aggression, stubbornness etc. Most of the kids are not aware that they are experiencing stress and they make it a part of their personality.
Reasons for stress among kids could be general or family related. The general reasons could include bullying at school, homework pressure, no friends at school, ill treatment from schoolmates or school teachers etc.. The family related reasons could include divorce, verbal abuse, grief, violence etc.
A usually active or docile kid will become inactive or aggressive under stress. Kids often tend to change their behavior whenever they are under stress. It is the responsibility of teachers at school and parents at home to observe the changes in the personality of the kids. They should talk to them and let them vent out their emotions. Kids should be encouraged to pursue their hobby. Parents can help the kids in managing the stress. They should not worry excessively in front of kids otherwise it can affect them badly. Below are some pointers for the parents to help their kids to cope up with stress:
·         Give a healthy diet to kids. Weak kids are more prone to stress.
·         Do not make stringent standards of discipline.
·         Try to be a good listener to your kid.
·         Learn to appreciate your kid.
·         Stop being over protective.
·         Provide an environment with open communication and encourage your kid to share any problem.
·         Engage in playful activities with your kid.
·         Observe the change in the behavior of your kid carefully.
·         Do not hesitate to seek professional help, if required.
Parents should try to understand the feeling of their kids and give them the support required. Love and support of family can help the kids in coping with stress.

Kids Getting Older Younger: The KGOY Syndrome

There was a time when we used to see a kid of 8-10 years old and say Soooo Cute!!!!!!! But we had never imagined that a time would come when we no longer would be able to use this exclamation. Nowadays, kids do not want to look cute rather they want to look stylish. They want to grow old at a very younger age.
I feel sorry for this new generation of kids but can’t blame kids for this situation. It is parents’ responsibility and they are only to blame.  Few days back I was going through one magazine and saw some photos of Tom Cruise’s daughter Suri Cruise. She wears all designer clothes with matching designer heels and accessories. To me, she doesn’t look like a 5 year old kid, but a spoilt kid with super rich parents who can fulfill all her wishes. Still, she is the inspiration for all those kids who want to look glamorous.
My friend Rajani has two daughters, Gowthami and Jhansi, 8 years and 15 years old respectively. Her younger daughter always imitates her teenage sister. She no longer shops from kids’ store but from the place where her sister shops.  Not only this, she dresses also like her. She insists on buying spaghettis, short skirts etc. for her, so that she looks cool just like her sister. My friend has tried everything to convince her to buy appropriate clothes for her age group but all went in vain.
Nowadays, parents do not have much time at their disposal but have lots of money. They just want to fulfill all the wishes of their kids. They do not bother what their kids are wearing as long as it is looking trendy and chic. Many kids’ stores have revealed that there is shortage of buyers for the age group of 8-12 years because that age group is now interested in teenage clothing. If this trend will continue, then a time will come when it will be very difficult to differentiate among a teenager and a kid.
It’s true that kids are growing old at a younger age but only when it comes to fashion or gadgets but not in terms of responsibility. Parents should see that their kids get old with time and enjoy every bit of their childhood. They should remember that, “Children are like wet cement. Whatever falls on them makes an impression.”

10on10 Parents’ 10on10 experiences

10on10 Parents’ 10on10 experiences
I’ve come across many parents who are 10on10 subscribers and today I’m writing a blog purely based on their 10on10 experiences. Last Friday, I met some parents to discuss the performance of their kids and to share their experiences. It’s very funny to see how parents become kids with their kids. Through this blog, I would be sharing those funny experiences with everyone.
I met a young mother of an LKG kid, Nalini. She told me that she loves to sit down with her daughter while she is working on 10on10 worksheets. She confessed to me that she herself enjoys 10on10 worksheets and sometimes she has to fight with her daughter for them as her daughter doesn’t permit her to do her worksheets. She keeps all of them to herself only. When I heard this story, I laughed a lot but let me admit; even I like to do these math worksheets. They are really interesting and a lot of fun to do.

In the above worksheet, a cartoon character explains the SUM and DIFFERENCE. My 5 year old niece often used to get confused with sum and difference. But with the help of cartoons she is able to understand the difference among the two functions.
My friend Stella has also taken the subscription of 10on10 math worksheets for her son, Darwin. She told me that she threatens her son that she will not give 10on10 worksheets to him if he’ll not listen to her, and it works all the time.  Her kid loves to do worksheets and will do anything to get them.
10on10 speaks of math as not in numbers but as a fun experience. It’s a 10 minutes fun activity, where kids learn math in an intuitive way. There are many more 10on10 experiences. We’ll unfold each and every experience one by one.
