Have you ever asked this to yourself when you were a kid?
Well, I know many kids who ask this to their parents and teachers. They are
unable to find the importance of math. Sometimes, I too think that why I learnt
so many theorems in math, when I actually don’t use them.
In a country like India, math is considered as a very
important subject. If you are not good at math, then you are not considered
intelligent enough. Almost all the competitive exams have a math section. It is
believed that rigorous math education is critical in creating the jobs that
drive an economy. Almost all the fields use the concepts of math in one or
another form. Math is also a part of our day to day life. One should be aware
of math concepts to find out solution to certain problems in real life.
It is difficult to answer certain questions which we face in
our daily life without the knowledge of math. For example, 250 gms of tomatoes are required for 1 kg chicken,
then how much tomatoes will be required for 750 gms. of chicken. Well, if
someone doesn’t know basics of math, then this problem will seem like herculean
task. Cooking is a technique which uses
basic concepts of math to maintain precision and quality. Ingredients are
carefully measured and added into the dish to maintain the uniformity and taste
of the dish. We use the concepts of measurement in the cooking. And not only
cooking, but many other daily activities need math concepts.
My grandmother is illiterate. Once she went to bank and
asked some guy’s help to withdraw Rs. 10,000. When she came back home, she had
only Rs. 5500. Since, she didn’t know how to count money, she trusted that guy
to count and give her. Well, her lack of education did cost us some amount but
it made us realize that how important it is to survive in today’s world. If you
don’t know your numbers then it is very difficult to keep a track of your money
as it is nothing but a game of numbers.
Hence, it can be said that it is very important to learn
math. It is not only a subject but a necessity of life.
